Hotspots of Diffusive CO 2 and CH 4 Emission From Tropical Reservoirs Shift Through Time

چکیده

The patterns of spatial and temporal variability in CO2 CH4 emission from reservoirs are still poorly studied, especially tropical regions where hydropower is growing. We performed spatially resolved measurements dissolved surface water concentrations their gas-exchange coefficients (k) to compute diffusive carbon flux four contrasting across Brazil during different hydrological seasons. used an online equilibration system measure concentrations; we estimated k floating chamber deployments conjunction with discrete concentration measurements. Diffusive emissions were higher dry season than rainy season, whereas there no consistent seasonal for emissions. Our results reveal that the magnitude within-reservoir varied strongly among River inflow areas often characterized by high seasonality flux. Areas close dam generally showed low but Overall, found reservoir exhibiting highest rates (“hotspots”) shifted substantially Estimates total surfaces differed between seasons a factor up 7 Chapéu D'Úvas, 13 Curuá-Una, 4 Furnas, 1.8 Funil, indicating need be at order constrain annual emission.

Uncertainties of carbon emission from hydroelectric reservoirs

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have substantially contributed to intensification of heavy precipitation and thus the risk of flood occurrence, and this anthropogenic climate change is now likely to continue for many centuries. Thus, precise quantification of human-induced GHG emissions is urgently required for modeling future global warming and precipitation changes, which is stro...

Nitrous oxide emissions from tropical hydroelectric reservoirs

[1] We report original data on nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from two tropical reservoirs, their rivers below the dam, and from natural aquatic ecosystems and rainforest soils in French Guiana and Panama. We also review published N2O fluxes from other tropical reservoirs and natural environments. We show that: (1) N2O emissions from tropical reservoirs occur mainly at the reservoir surface, fluxes...

Biodiversity hotspots through time: an introduction.

International targets set for reducing the rate of biodiversity loss--the 2010 target--and ensuring environmental stability (Millennium Development Goals) have helped to focus the efforts of the scientific community on providing the data necessary for their implementation. The urgency of these goals, coupled with the increased rate of habitat alteration worldwide, has meant that actions have la...

Temporal changes in the emissions of CH 4 and CO from China estimated from CH 4 / CO 2 and CO / CO 2 correlations observed at Hateruma Island

In situ observation of the atmospheric CO2, CH4, and CO mixing ratios at Hateruma Island (HAT, 24.05 N, 123.80 E) often show synoptic-scale variations with correlative elevations during winter, associated with air transport from the East Asian countries. We examine winter (November–March) trends in 1CH4 /1CO2, 1CO /1CO2, and1CO /1CH4 observed at Hateruma over the period 1999 to 2010. To investi...
